No matter what phase of music I enjoyed, from heavy metal to punk to Christian, John Mellencamp was always a favorite though every decade of my life. I remember being 16 and hearing his lyric, Hold on to 16 as long as you can, changes coming around real soon make us women and men' and I took it to heart.
The songs mean to me: spending time with family in the car(s) listening to his music.
Well, I am from Evansville, Indiana, so it means the "Midwest" to me. He sings songs that relate to Indiana heritage and I relate to that!
I was an usual female, I connected to his early lyrics and didn't understand why - but I kept listening and loving the vibes and lyrics! I even wrote a college essay that opened with some of his song lyrics..."Future generations, riding on the highways that we build, I hope they have a better understanding."
Grew up with John's music, just part of life in Southern Indiana.

He’s a great artist and it shows that anyone can make it in this world even someone from a small town we just happened to be passing through.

John's music reminds me there was a time when political lines weren’t so definitive.
What does John's music mean to me? To me it means that he is a God.
